U-TYPE Heat Exchanger

A U-TYPE or U-tube heat exchanger is a type of shell-and-tube heat exchanger where the internal tubes are bent into a U shape. This design allows the fluid to enter from one side, make a 180° turn, and exit from the same side.

General Structure

U-Tube heat exchangers consist of:

1. Shell: A cylindrical steel casing through which one fluid flows.
2. U-Tubes: Heat transfer tubes carrying the second fluid. They are bent at one end to create a return path.
3. Tube Sheet: A plate that holds the tubes at both ends. U-Type exchangers use only one tube sheet.
4. Head: A chamber at the tube end for fluid entry and exit.
